How to Become a Dental Assistant

Often confused with dental hygienists, dental assistants prepare dental patients, equipment, and instruments prior to the point at which a hygienist or dentist performs a procedure on the patient. Assistants may also help the dentist by handing over the required instruments, applying topical numbing agents, or holding the suction tube during a procedure. Office tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and managing records may also be included in a dental assistant's work duties.

While hygienists play a more hands-on role with patients and, therefore, are required to meet specific education and training requirements, there is no set degree requirement for dental assistants, and there are many paths aspiring dental assistants may take in pursuing their career. In some states, dental assistants may learn through on the job training; however, most inexperienced individuals who wish to work as a dental assistant must complete an accredited training and education program. Dental assistant programs are regulated by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which has accredited 255 programs in the United States. These programs are available at dental schools, community colleges, vocational schools, technical institutes, and universities. A dental assistant program generally takes from nine to eleven months to complete; however, part-time programs, which may be longer in duration, and distance learning programs are also available.

Whether a dental assistant will be required to obtain a license or certification prior to being allowed to work professionally will depend on the state in which the individual wishes to work. Many dental assistants complete the national certification exam that is offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Obtaining DANB certification may benefit prospective dental assistants even if certification is not required in their state as successful completion of the exam demonstrates a standard level of knowledge and competency. Therefore, obtaining certification may improve a candidate's job prospects and overall competitiveness in the job market.
